How to store statement earrings

Big, stone-set earrings need different storage from studs. Five rules that keep them untangled, unscratched and bright.

Statement earrings are architecture: drops, clusters, prongs and hinges. Stored carelessly, they scratch each other, snag, and tarnish. Stored well, they come out looking the way they went in.

1. One pair, one home

Keep each pair in its own soft pouch or small zip bag. Stones are hard enough to scratch silver and each other, and clusters love to tangle.

2. Flat, not hanging

Hanging organisers look lovely, but heavy drops hanging for months strain hooks and hinges, and they sit in open air. Lay statement pairs flat, side by side, backs on.

3. Check the lining

Many jewellery boxes are lined with felt or wool, both sources of sulfur that speed up tarnish. If yours is, keep each pair in a bag inside it, or choose anti-tarnish lining.

4. Mind the climate

Not the bathroom (steam), not the windowsill (sun can fade amethyst and citrine), not the kitchen (cooking fumes). A bedroom drawer is ideal. In humid climates, add a silica gel sachet.

5. Separate by finish

Keep rose- and gold-toned pieces apart from plain silver and from each other. Friction wears finishes, so give them their own space.

The quick setup

A shallow drawer, a few small zip bags, anti-tarnish strips, one silica sachet, and a label on each bag. Ten minutes once, and your earrings are protected for years.
